How I Relieved My One-Year-Old's Constipation Naturally – A Real Mom’s Experience

🌸 How I Relieved My One-Year-Old's Constipation Naturally – A Real Mom’s Experience

As a mother of a 1 year and 2-month-old baby, I’ve always been committed to giving him the best — exclusive breastfeeding, no packaged food, no cow or buffalo milk, and only homecooked meals. So when I noticed that my little one was struggling during his bowel movements about a month ago, I was honestly surprised and concerned.

He began passing hard, pebble-like stool, and the discomfort on his face broke my heart.

At first, I thought it might just be a phase, so I ignored it. But soon, the problem got worse, and I couldn’t bear to see him in pain. Despite my conscious diet choices, my baby was dealing with constipation — something I never expected.

So I did what most mothers would do — I started Googling, talking to friends, and asking for advice. One friend recommended Mugli Ghutti 555 with warm water, and my mother-in-law suggested Harad, a traditional remedy. I tried both, and while they provided some temporary relief, nothing seemed to solve the problem permanently. Mugli Ghutti, for example, only worked as long as I continued giving it.

That's when I decided to take a step back, observe, and make some diet changes — small, smart ones that made a big difference.

✅ Small Changes That Helped

My baby didn’t enjoy dal, sabzi, or even potatoes — but he loved chapati! So I began sneaking veggies into his favorite foods like rotis, chillas, and oats to add more fiber without making meals a struggle.

🥣 My Go-To Constipation Relief Recipe: Ghiya-Tomato Oats

This recipe became a lifesaver — simple, quick, and rich in fiber!

Ingredients:

  • ½ grated tomato

  • 2–3 tbsp grated bottle gourd (ghiya) or ash gourd (petha)

  • 1–2 tbsp oil

  • A pinch of jeera and ajwain

  • A pinch of turmeric, salt, and dhania powder

  • 3 tbsp oats

  • ½ to 1 tbsp desi cow ghee

Steps:

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add jeera and ajwain.

  2. Add the grated tomato, haldi, salt, and dhania powder. Cook until oil separates.

  3. Add grated ghiya/petha, a little water, and cover for 3–4 minutes until soft.

  4. Add oats with water (as needed) and cook for another 3–4 minutes.

  5. Add desi ghee at the end — a natural digestive lubricant.

  6. (Optional) Add a pinch of Maggi masala or chaat masala if your baby dislikes the taste.

🧡 Bonus: This recipe also works wonders for elders with constipation!

🍽 More Smart Food Tips:

  • Grate bottle gourd, ash gourd, or carrots into your chapatis and parathas.

  • Always include a spoon of desi ghee on top.

  • Focus on fiber-rich foods in creative ways.

🌞 Routine & Body Care Additions:

Alongside food, I made some gentle routine changes:

  • Set a more consistent sleeping and waking time

  • Increased active play during the day

  • Started belly and back massages using warm desi ghee or coconut oil — this helped stimulate digestion and calm his system.

💬 Final Thoughts:

No matter how much we try to do right, motherhood comes with unexpected challenges. Watching your baby in pain due to constipation is tough — but it’s not uncommon. With love, patience, and some smart tricks, you can find what works for your little one.

So mama, if you're going through the same, just know you're not alone. Keep observing, keep learning — and trust your instincts. You’ve got this. 💗
