"Pregnancy With Dermoid Cysts: My Real-Life Journey to Motherhood"
Introduction
In 2018, a routine check-up for a stomach issue turned into the beginning of a long, unexpected journey. I was diagnosed with small dermoid cysts on both my ovaries. The doctors assured me there was nothing to worry about. Back then, they were barely noticeable and supposedly harmless. Like many of us, I trusted the expert advice and moved on — unaware of the emotional rollercoaster life had planned for me.
This is not just a story about a health condition. It’s about strength, miracles, unexpected blessings, and embracing motherhood even when everything seemed uncertain.
When It All Started: 2018 Diagnosis
Back in 2018, I started experiencing unexplained stomach issues. A complete set of medical tests revealed that I had dermoid cysts on both ovaries, but they were quite small. My doctor told me not to worry, as they weren’t harmful at that stage. With no visible symptoms or pain, I moved on, continued life as usual, and honestly, forgot about them.
A New Chapter: Marriage, Ulcerative Colitis & Rediscovery
Fast forward to 2022, after my marriage, my lifestyle naturally shifted. I began experiencing gut-related issues again, which led to a new diagnosis: Ulcerative Colitis. As part of the investigations, another ultrasound revealed that my dermoid cysts had grown in size — each around 5 cm now.
I spiraled into stress. I spent hours Googling treatments, reading medical journals, watching YouTube stories, and trying everything — yoga, exercise, home remedies, diet changes, spirituality, and even manifestation techniques. Nothing worked.
The Emotional Storm: Infertility Fears & Doctor Consultations
Consulting multiple gynecologists only left me more heartbroken. Most advised laparoscopic surgery and warned that the cysts could damage both ovaries, potentially affecting fertility. The thought of losing the ability to conceive was devastating. It worsened my Ulcerative Colitis due to extreme stress.
But then, a friend said something simple but life-changing:
> “Why worry about what might happen? Just take a chance — jo hoga dekha jaayega.”
That day, we decided to stop overthinking and try for a baby naturally — without expectations, without protection.
A Miracle Unfolds: Conception Against All Odds
To our absolute surprise — and disbelief — I conceived in the very first cycle. I was overjoyed yet anxious. Could I handle a pregnancy with Ulcerative Colitis, thyroid imbalance, and two large cysts?
Ignoring the fear, we chose to embrace this unexpected blessing. My pregnancy journey was anything but smooth, but my heart was full. Carrying a baby while having two large cysts pressing around your uterus wasn’t easy. My gynecologist even joked once:
> “Are your three babies doing okay?” 😂
Pregnancy Challenges: A Scare in the Fourth Month
During my fourth month, I was rushed to the emergency room at night with intense abdominal pain. All signs pointed to an ovarian torsion — a dangerous complication due to cysts twisting the ovary. It was scary. An emergency surgery during pregnancy can risk both the mother and baby.
Thankfully, after 2 ultrasounds and 1 MRI, I was discharged with the pain subsiding mysteriously. Doctors couldn't determine the exact cause — but once again, God had other plans for me.
Delivery & Postpartum Reality Check
In May 2024, I delivered my beautiful baby boy via C-section. While we hoped the doctors could remove the cysts during delivery, they advised against it, fearing excessive blood loss.
A month later, I had a pus infection in my stitches. During the ultrasound, we found out that the cysts had grown even bigger — now around 7 cm. I finally decided I couldn’t delay any longer.
The Big Decision: Surgery While Raising a 4-Month-Old
My gynecologist advised waiting until my baby turned 6 months old. But my instincts told me otherwise. I scheduled my laparoscopic surgery for September 2024, when my son was just 4 months old.
The night before surgery, the doctor warned me that if the cysts had twisted or damaged my ovaries, they might have to remove both. I was shocked. After a brief, emotional conversation, my husband and I calmly accepted whatever would come. We had our son, and that was enough.
Surgery Day: A Happy Twist of Fate
Surgery went smoothly. And here’s the miracle:
Both dermoid cysts were successfully removed, and both ovaries were saved, completely healthy!
All I was left with were four tiny scars on my postpartum belly — my proud badges of strength and survival.
One Year Later: What I’ve Learned
It’s been almost a year since that surgery. Life has moved on. I’ve embraced my body with its marks, challenges, and victories.
💫 My Biggest Takeaway?
Don't drown in the fear of “what if.” Work on the solutions, be prepared for every possibility, but always trust that good things are on the way.
Positivity, courage, and faith can truly create miracles.
