What I Do When My Child Refuses to Eat Anything
Recently, my baby has started refusing every single bite I offer. Whether it’s food or liquids, he simply turns his face away or makes funny expressions — naak chadha ke, muh fer lena 😅.
If you’re a mom, you know how stressful this phase can be. Seeing your child not eating for days makes you overthink. And to add to it, you get “gyaan” from all sides:
-
“Doctor ko dikhao!”
-
“Nazar lag gayi hai.”
-
“Tum dhyaan nahi deti.”
-
“Shayad muh mein chhale ho gaye hain.”
-
“Kahin bimar to nahi hai?”
And the list goes on…
First of all, I want to tell all conscious mummas — stay calm, don’t panic. It’s completely normal. Babies go through phases where they eat less or refuse food altogether. It could be teething, growth spurts, sickness, or just their mood.
Why I Never Force Feed
Forcing food is never an option. It only creates resistance and sometimes, even hatred for that food.
Think about yourself — when you’re sick or not in the mood, you don’t enjoy eating either. Sometimes you crave spicy, sometimes sweet, sometimes nothing at all. Babies are the same, except they cannot express it in words.
👉 Let me share a personal example:
When I first introduced solids, my baby loved bananas 🍌. He would jump like a monkey seeing one! One day, he wasn’t feeling well, and my in-laws still tried to feed him bananas, thinking, “Ye toh hamesha khata hai.” But he refused. They kept forcing, and this went on for 3 days. The result? He completely lost interest in bananas.
That one fruit he loved turned into something he hated because of the negative association. It took almost 8 months of patience to bring bananas back into his diet! Lesson learned: never force feed. Offer, and if they refuse, try again another time.
My Gentle Hacks That Help
1. Make Food Fun
Kids today are extra smart and active — they need variety and creativity. Colorful plates, fun shapes, and playful presentation often work wonders.
2. Involve Them in Food
Let them help in serving or small cooking tasks like stirring or washing veggies. When kids feel involved, they get curious to try.
3. Follow Mealtime Routine
Try to fix mealtimes — e.g., breakfast at 7:30 AM, snack at 9:30 AM, lunch at 12 PM. This helps them recognize hunger cues and build a rhythm.
4. No Junk Before Meals
Avoid biscuits, chips, or other fillers before meals — they kill hunger and make proper meals harder.
5. Respect Their Hunger
Don’t measure food in spoons or bowls. Children eat according to their appetite, not our expectations. Sometimes they’ll eat a lot, sometimes just a few bites — and that’s okay.
6. Small Portions, Big Variety
Offer a little of everything — roti, sabzi, salad — instead of a big plate of one food. Rotate options daily to avoid monotony.
7. Create a Distraction-Free Zone
No toys, no TV, no phones during meals. Just you, your baby, and food. This helps them connect with eating.
8. Respect Off Days
If your baby is teething, sick, or just not hungry — let them be. Offer fluids, comfort, and wait. It’s a short phase, not a permanent problem.
What I Don’t Do
-
❌ I don’t bribe with sweets.
-
❌ I don’t rely on packaged junk food just to “fill the tummy.”
-
❌ I don’t distract with screens during meals.
Yes, it’s tempting when you’re stressed, but short-term fixes can lead to long-term struggles.
A Final Word to Fellow Moms
Dear mummas, please don’t stress if your child refuses food. This is just a phase. With patience, creativity, and consistency, things get better. Remember: patience works better than pressure.
